Calving date calculator

Find the expected calving date of a cow or heifer from the date of service or insemination, and when to check for pregnancy.

Enter the date of service or insemination.

How long is a cow pregnant?

On average about 283 days, a little over nine months.

Breed matters: continental breeds such as Charolais, Limousin and Simmental often carry a few days longer than British breeds such as Angus and Hereford. Bull calves are usually carried a day or two longer than heifer calves.

How exact is the date?

Most calves are born within about 10 days either side of the expected date, so start watching the cow closely a week or two before it.

When to check for pregnancy

A vet can confirm pregnancy by ultrasound from about 30 days after service, and by rectal examination from about 35–45 days.
